Open Apiary Days

Cass working with bees

ISU is hosting monthly Open Apiary Days in partnership with the Great Plains Master Beekeeper Program. Join us in our honey apiary to sharpen your beekeeping skills and discuss best management practices as we conduct our monthly hive inspections. Moreover, these visits can be logged as volunteer hours for those participating in the Great Plains Master Beekeeper program.

Location

The ISU Horticulture Research Station

55519 170th Street
Ames, IA 50010

Dress Code

Please come dressed appropriately for beekeeping. Bring your own beekeeping protective gear (veil, jacket, bee suit) or borrow one of our veil jackets and come dressed in long sleeves, long pants, and close-toed shoes. It is also highly recommended that visitors avoid wearing black or dark-colored clothing (this includes socks) and avoid strong-smelling perfumes and deodorants that could irritate the bees.

Waiver

The university asks us to have visitors engaging in hands-on beekeeping activities to sign a liability waiver, recognizing that honey bees are a stinging insect and acknowledging the risks related to beekeeping.
